Enrollment at community colleges is up while state and local financial support is down says a survey recently conducted by the League for Innovation in the Community College and the Campus Computing Project¹. These two trends are forcing local schools to turn students away in an effort to cap enrollment numbers.

Statistically speaking, having a post-secondary education certificate or degree means earning a higher salary in comparison to those with just a high school diploma or equivalent. That statement has been confirmed in numerous studies and surveys² and is often one of the driving factors for those looking to continue their education. With community colleges unable to meet the needs of everyone who wants to improve their life through education, career colleges can fill the gap and provide better value.

A first-time analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Education and other public agencies will be released Thursday, April 1 to display the value of private sector career education. The study was conducted by the Parthenon Group’s Education Center of Excellence³ in response to insinuations that career colleges do not deliver as much value as community colleges. Among the findings are the following conclusions:

• For-profit colleges serve a larger proportion of “high-risk” students—students who pose a greater risk of dropping out of school;
• For-profit colleges have a higher success rate of students attaining their sought after degree or certificate or transferring elsewhere within five years of enrollment;
• For-profit students yield a greater earnings gain (an average of 54 percent) through their studies than community college students;
• For-profit students are less likely to be surprised by the amount they owe at the end of their studies than community college students.
