You may already know this, but people often imagine a crime scene when they hear the word criminal justice. Not everyone in the industry gets to work at a crime scene though. And people in supervisor or investigative positions most likely started at the bottom and had to work their way up.
Many criminal justice jobs require people to have experience in one of the following positions:
- Patrol officer
- Correctional officer
- Probation officer
The field of criminal justice is huge, and you may have to carry a firearm. You may even be in a situation where you’d have to use your firearm against another person. Would you feel comfortable working with offenders? If you work in corrections, probation, parole and within institutions, you may be in contact with offenders on a daily basis.
Most people working in the field of criminal justice find it challenging. No matter where you work or the criminal justice career you choose, your environment may cause you to stay sharp and alert. There are times when you’ll be expected to protect and defend.
Other times you may need to become authoritative. Or, you may have to work long hours. However, if you like working with your mind and helping protect the rights of others, a career in criminal justice may be a good fit for you.
