You may already know this, but people often imagine a crime scene when they hear the word criminal justice. Not everyone in the industry gets to work at a crime scene though. And people in supervisor or investigative positions most likely started at the bottom and had to work their way up.
Many criminal justice jobs require people to have experience in one of the following positions:
- Patrol officer
- Correctional officer
- Probation officer
The field of criminal justice is huge, and you may have to carry a firearm. You may even be in a situation where you’d have to use your firearm against another person. Would you feel comfortable working with offenders? If you work in corrections, probation, parole and within institutions, you may be in contact with offenders on a daily basis.
Most people working in the field of criminal justice find it challenging. No matter where you work or the criminal justice career you choose, your environment may cause you to stay sharp and alert. There are times when you’ll be expected to protect and defend.
Other times you may need to become authoritative. Or, you may have to work long hours. However, if you like working with your mind and helping protect the rights of others, a career in criminal justice may be a good fit for you.

Enrollment at community colleges is up while state and local financial support is down says a survey recently conducted by the League for Innovation in the Community College and the Campus Computing Project1. These two trends are forcing local schools to turn students away in an effort to cap enrollment numbers.
Statistically speaking, having a post-secondary education certificate or degree means earning a higher salary in comparison to those with just a high school diploma or equivalent. That statement has been confirmed in numerous studies and surveys2 and is often one of the driving factors for those looking to continue their education. With community colleges unable to meet the needs of everyone who wants to improve their life through education, career colleges can fill the gap and provide better value.
A first-time analysis of data from the U.S. Department of Education and other public agencies will be released Thursday, April 1 to display the value of private sector career education. The study was conducted by the Parthenon Group’s Education Center of Excellence3 in response to insinuations that career colleges do not deliver as much value as community colleges. Among the findings are the following conclusions:
- For-profit colleges serve a larger proportion of “high-risk” students—students who pose a greater risk of dropping out of school;
- For-profit colleges have a higher success rate of students attaining their sought after degree or certificate or transferring elsewhere within five years of enrollment;
- For-profit students yield a greater earnings gain (an average of 54 percent) through their studies than community college students;
- For-profit students are less likely to be surprised by the amount they owe at the end of their studies than community college students.

WASHINGTON — Rialto police officer Crystal Gonzalez received the Career College Association (CCA) 2010 GREAT (Graduate Recognition for Excellence, Achievement and Talent) Award at a ceremony in the Cannon House Caucus Room on Wednesday, March 10.
CCA President Harris Miller presented the award to Gonzalez, a 2007 graduate of Everest College in Ontario, California, for her outstanding academic and personal achievements. Gonzalez’s determination to be a source of positive change in her community where she serves as a police officer and her heroism serving our nation overseas made her an ideal recipient of this year’s GREAT Award.
As a child, Gonzalez knew that she wanted to be a police officer. To pursue this goal, she decided to join the military to serve her country and gain valuable professional skills. Joining the military just before 9/11, she was promptly deployed to Afghanistan and then to Iraq, where she provided supplies to Special Forces troops. While in Iraq, Gonzalez was involved in an accident where the driver of her tanker truck crashed into a ravine filled with water, trapping her and her partner. Through tremendous effort, she managed to kick open the gun turret hatch and swim to the surface, but with her partner still trapped inside the truck, she dived back into the water, pulled him back up to safety, and performed resuscitation on him until he was breathing again on his own. It was this act of heroism that solidified Gonzalez’s resolve to continue to help others by becoming a police officer. After the military, she enrolled at Everest College choosing Criminal Justice as her major. She graduated with a 3.9 GPA. Following her education at Everest College, Gonzalez finally realized her goal and enrolled at the police academy, graduating in the top 10 of her class and becoming an officer with the Rialto Police Department.
“Career colleges graduate some of this country’s most extraordinary students, many of whom balance career and family as they overcome overwhelming challenges,” Miller said. “CCA’s GREAT Award recipients represent the power of educational achievements, and the dedication to reaching goals. We applaud Crystal Gonzalez for her heroism, service and sacrifice. We are proud to present her with this award.”
Since the program’s inception in 2004, the GREAT Awards have honored recent career college graduates who have overcome extraordinary difficulties and circumstances to be where they are today. In past years, CCA has honored military veterans, disaster survivors, and other truly outstanding individuals whose stories are inspiring and memorable.
