Looking to carpool? If so, there are benefits for both driver and passenger. If you’re the driver you can save money on the commute by sharing gas costs. You’ll also put less wear and tear on your car by saving time in traffic if a carpool lane is available. If you’re a carpool passenger, having a ride to and from school can make a big difference in your attendance — being in class every day can help you succeed.
The best place to start, whether driving or seeking to share a ride, is by checking with student services at your local Everest campus. If there’s an available rideshare program, they’ll have information on who’s participating.
Here’s how to make a carpool work:
• Agree to work out a ride schedule –– Coordinate departure and arrival times so that it’s convenient for everyone.
• Be willing to compromise on conditions inside the car –– Should the heater or air conditioner be turned on or off? Will the music you like to offend anyone else?
• Consider gas costs –– Offer to share the costs if you’re a passenger. The driver can also decide if he or she wants help with those costs, and how much.
It may take time to create a good, functioning carpool, so be patient. Try it out for a few days and see if it works for you before you decide to look for an alternative. You just may find that carpooling makes it easier to get to school – and you may make some new friends in the process.
