What Do You Learn in a Medical Billing Program?

Posted on: December 12, 2006

Medical BillingWhen looking for a quality medical billing program, it’s important to take a close look at the types of classes you’ll take. Signs of a quality medical billing course include a study of:

  • Medical Insurance & Billing Issues
  • Claims Processing
  • Collection Strategies
  • Procedural Coding
  • Diagnostic Coding
  • Basic Medical Terminology
  • Basic keyboarding skills

Class titles will be different, but you want to make sure the above subjects are taught at some point during your medical billing training.

If you are joining an Associate’s Degree in Medical Billing and Coding, then you’ll want to make sure the program also includes a study of:

  • Medical Office Management
  • ICD-9 Coding
  • Advanced Medical Coding Techniques
  • Medical Billing and Coding Computer Applications

Please be aware that an Associate’s degree in Medical Billing is not necessary to have a successful career as a biller or coder. A diploma from a quality medical billing course will give you the training needed to start your career much quicker.

The advantage of getting your diploma in medical billing and coding is that you’ll graduate and start working much faster (typically in less than a year). And if you decide to work on your Associate’s degree later, you’ll already have the experience behind you which will probably make school much easier.
