Making mistakes is easy. Fixing them is hard. But that’s exactly what Becky Malivuk did, and what earned her the 2011 Dream Award and a $2,500 scholarship from Everest College.

The fast life had caught up to Becky, leading to health problems, job problems, and even a run-in with the law. That’s when she decided it was time to make a change for the better put herself on the positive path to success. And the best way to do that was with an education.

Knowing that returning to school would ultimately create a better life, Malivuk enrolled in Everest College’s Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program. She quickly excelled in her classes and even became a student ambassador, offering her fellow classmates the support and encouragement they needed to succeed.

As Malivuk pursued her studies, her personal life began to turn around, too. Thanks to her excellent school attendance record and promising grades, a judge repealed all of Malivuk’s legal matters.

“Becky is truly deserving of this award,” said Catherine Killian, president of Everest College in Merrionette Park. Ill. “We are very proud she found a way to succeed.”

Medical insurance billing is a valued profession in the health care field, but isn’t always understood. Here’s a quick look at what the job entails.

A medical insurance biller and coder’s job includes:

  • Recording patient data — birth date, insurance information, medical reason for appointment(s)
  • “Coding” a patient’s diagnosis — there’s a code for nearly every illness or ailment that all insurance companies use
  • Verifying insurance — making sure the patient’s insurance is current and covers their appointment
  • Keeping track of patient accounts — has the insurance company paid? Does the patient need to pay part of it?

This job is a good fit for people who are detail-oriented and like working with a clear process. To learn more about our Medical Insurance Billing and Coding program and the benefits of an Everest education, visit Everest.

Medical Insurance Billing and Coding (MIBC) is one of Everest’s most popular career programs. MIBC is critical to the operation of physicians’ practices, health clinics, hospitals and any other facility that needs to process medical insurance claims to pay its doctors, nurses and other service providers.

The responsibilities of the typical MIBC specialist include:

  • Entering insurance claims into a database using standard codes for medical diagnostics, treatments and procedures.
  • Submitting claims to the appropriate insurance companies.
  • If claims are denied, conferring with the appropriate physician to ensure that the claim was properly entered and, if necessary, resubmitting the claim with new information.

Because of its popularity, MIBC is taught throughout the system of Everest College, Institute and University. You can usually complete MIBC training in less than a year. For more information, please visit www.everest.edu.

CHICAGO (Dec. 6, 2010) – Everest College is expanding in the Chicago area with the addition of a campus in southwest suburban Bedford Park. The new school, designed to help meet the growing demand for hands-on, career-focused education, is the seventh Everest campus in the Chicago metropolitan area.

“Based on the growing enrollment at our other local schools, it’s apparent the Chicago market for career training is underserved, especially in the face of the high unemployment rate and funding cutbacks at public post-secondary institutions,” said Sean Quinn, regional vice president of operations for Everest College. “We look forward to bringing more educational opportunities to Chicago and suburban residents who seek new skills and careers to better compete in this tough job market.”

The 40,814-square-foot campus facility in Bedford Park will be located less than two miles south of Midway Airport at 7414 S. Cicero Ave., across from the Ford City Mall. The campus opens for visitors Dec. 6, and classes officially begin Jan. 26 with a projected enrollment of 1,000 students.

Everest College – Bedford Park will offer a variety of programs for full-time and part-time students, including dental assistant, medical assistant, and medical billing and coding.

Classes are conducted during the day, evenings, and on weekends to make it convenient for students who are currently employed or have other needs for a flexible schedule, according to Quinn. The campus is located near public transportation corridors for easy accessibility.

The new school also creates jobs, already bringing approximately 45 faculty and other staff to the area.

Everest College’s six other Chicago-area campuses are located in Burr Ridge, Chicago, Merrionette Park, North Aurora, Skokie and Merrillville, Ind.
