The Different Types
You’re back at school and, by now, you’ve probably been able to figure out some of the different personalities around you. Do you have a new teacher that just doesn’t like you for some reason? Is there someone who bugs you when you’re walking to your next class? Do you sit in front of someone who won’t leave you alone when you’re trying to pay attention in class?
Difficult people come in all shapes and sizes. While there is no single way to deal with all of them, there is a helpful pattern you can follow.
Stop, Think, Ask
It’s pretty natural to immediately defend yourself when someone says something mean to you. Instead of getting angry, be the bigger person. Stop for a second, take a breath, and ask the other person why they’re acting this way. You will probably catch them off-guard, which gives you a better chance to talk things out.
Sometimes, people just like to share their own anger by pointing it at others. You just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. You can’t control what other people say and do but you can control how you respond.
Don’t Take It Personally
If someone you don’t care about annoys you, don’t take it personally. Save your energy by calmly confronting the problem instead of trying to hurt the other person back. Sometimes just discussing the problem with the other person won’t solve the issue; they may continue to be mean or annoying. If it becomes too much of a problem, you can ask others for help.
It’s always OK to ask a teacher or a counselor for help when you’ve tried to address the problem and the problem continues. It’s not about “tattling” on someone, it’s about your right as a student not to be hassled while you’re at school.
Stay Calm, No Matter What
As a student, you have the right to enjoy your school experience without being hassled by others. Stand up for yourself and be assertive, but keep your emotions in check. Stay calm and you’ll always be the winner.
